As on 1.1.1998 Tourism Deptt. Has identified 15 nos. Tourist spots in Keonjhar district namely :-
Keonjhargarh, the district headquarters town is famous for Vishnu Temple,Baladevjew Temple and on its outskirts the shrines of Sidha Jagannath,Siddha Kali and Panchbati amidist picturesque settings. It is also most convenient base centre from where the visitors can plan their visit to various places of interest in the district. The place is well connected with Calcutta (354 kms),Sambalpur (230 Kms),Tata (174 kms),Rourkela (217 kms) and Bhubaneswar (235 kms). The accommodation facilities available in Keonjhar district is enclosed in a separate sheet in Annexure-I. 6 kms. From Keonjhar town situated by the side of N.H.-6. It is a small (100 ft) beautiful waterfalls suitable for outing. The spot is a very good picnic spot. Further it keeps one's eye standstill adding the beauty of Keonjhar town. Service buses and hired vehicles are available at Keonjhar. For accommodation a good number of hotels are available in the town. Badaghagara 10 kms. From Keonjhar town, it is yet another small (200 ft) but exciting waterfall. It is one of the most popular picnic spots of the district. Service bus and hired vehicles are available at Keonjhar. For accommodation tourist will have to stay at Keonjhar. Gonasika Surrounded by a series of valleys and wooded hills of varying colours,the place is famous as a centre of pilgrimage for the temple of Brahmeswar Mahadev established by the side of river Baitarani. In fact, this is the place from where the river starts flowing. A little away from the point of origin, the river goes underground ( and hence called guptaganga) only to be seen jumping after a short distance over a stone projection looking like the nostril of a cow. The scenic beauty of the place is simply charming. It is 33 kms. From Keonjhar out of which service buses are available for 24 kms. For rest 9 kms tourist will have to go by either foot or hired vehicles. For accommodation tourists will have to stay at Keonjhar town. Khandadhar A sparkling waterfall of 500 ft. amidst lush green forest. A shower in the cascading water is a great experience. This waterfall is a smoking waterfall because of the "Smoke like" appearance created by the spray of the plunging waters of the waterfall at this spot. The spot is ideal for picnic. It is 60 kms. From Keonjhar town ( of this about 40 kms fair weather and only jeepable). No accommodation facilities at the spot. Tourist will have to stay at Keonjhar. Handibhanga It is magnificent waterfall falling from the height of about 200 ft. amidst lush green forest. The scenic beauty of the spot attracts many tourists. Moreover the place is a good picnic spot. The spot can be approached from Keonjhar (50 kms0 upto Kalimati (45 kms pitch road and service bus available) and from Kalimati to the spot ( 5ms) metallic fair weather road. No accommodation facilities are available at the spot. The tourist will have to stay either at Keonjhar (50 kms) or at Joda (30 kms) or at Barbil (42 kms). Murgamahadev It is situated by the side of a perennial spring of Thakurani hill in Champua Sub-Division of Keonjhar District. It is famous for the temple of Murga Mahadev. The spot is 70 kms. From Keonjhar ( of this 6 kms, fair-weather road). Regular service buses are available upto Bileipada (64 kms) from Keonjhar. No accommodation facilities is available at the spot. Tourist will have to stay either at Joda (11 kms) or at Keonjhar ( 70 kms). Sitabinji Situated by the side of river Sita, the spot has gained prominence as a place of having ancient fresco painting on a rock shelter called " Ravan Chhaya" which is looking like a half opened umbrella. The painting depits a royal procession. It is 30 Kms from Keonjhar (25 kms. On Jajpur-Keonjhar road upto Katarabeda and 5 kms. From there). N Orissa accommodation facilities is available at the spot. Tourists will have to stay either at Keonjhar or at Ghatagaon. Ghatagaon 50 kms. from Keonjhar town on the N.H.215 towards Cuttack, the place is known through the state for the shrine of Goddess Tarini Pitha. The place is famous as a centre of pilgrimage for Goddess Tarini. A P.W.D. I.B., Tarini Yatri niwas of Tarini Trust and a Panthasala of Tourism Deptt. Are available to cater the accommodation facilities. Deogaon Kushaleswar On the river Kusei near Anandapur, the temple of Kushaleswar built in 900 A.D. is a famous centre of pilgrimage. Once upon a time it was a flourishing seat of Buddhism. Another important monument of the place is the stone embankment on the river which is the second of its kind in the state. Regular bus services are available to the spot. No accommodation facilities is available. Tourist will have to stay either at Anandapur (9kms) or at Keonjhar (89 kms). Gundichaghai It is famous for a small charming waterfall about 50 ft. high on the river Mudala being situated amidst lush green forest. It is ideal for picnic during winter. It is 65 kms. From Keonjhar via Ghatagaon. For accommodation a revenue rest shed at Harichandanpur (5 kms) and PWD I.B.,tarini Yatri Niwas and Panthasala of Tourism Deptt. Are available at Ghatagaon. Hadagarh Hadagarh is the Dam on the river Salandi in ANANDAPUR subdivision of Keonjhar. It is an ideal picnic spot for round the year. The scenic beauty of the spot is very charming. An inspection bunglow of Irrigation Deptt. Is there to cater accommodation facilities to the tourist. It is 35 kms. From Anandapur. One can approach the spot either from Bhadrak or from Anandapur and L.K.Road by bus,trekker and taxi etc. Rajanagar It is famous for the ruined palace of Keonjhar King. Also raghunath Jew Matha, Dadhibaban Jew temple and chadei Kudoor are other attraction of the spot. Different kinds of birds from different places gather here ( Chadhei Kudoor) in winter which is most enjoyable. It 27 kms. from Keonjhar. Tourist will have to visit the spot by hired vehicle. No accommodation facilities available there. The same are available at Keonjhar town. Kanjipani Kanjipani 30 kms. From Keonjhar is a scenic spot. In winter the temperature falls below 0 ' Collector that ice falls there. The beautiful landscaping, lush green forest and wild lives of the spot are very much impressive. Regular bus services are available from Keonjhar and Pallahara. For accommodation one N.H. I.B. is there. Podasingidi ( Gadachandi and Chakratirtha) Gadachandi,the place is famous for Goddess Chandi. A perennial stream which is a part of the Boula Mountains in Anandapur flows by the side of the Gadachandi Pitha is really marvelous. Besides this another attraction is cave climbing on the hill. Chakratirtha, It is a beautiful picnic spot. The spot is surrounded with green forest,beautiful waterfall and also a Shiva temple. The waterfall is perennial. There is a Baba (Monk) who looks after the temple. There is a beautiful garden where varieties of fruits like,lemon,Guava,Papeya,Banana and Strawberry are developed by the help of Baba. It is 97 kms. From Keonjhar. No accommodation facilities available there. Tourists will have to stay at Anandapur.
Tourist office, Keonjhar gives information to the visitors about tourist interest places of the district, accommodation facilities and information on transport facilities available for them. Collection of Tourist Arrival Data The tourist arrival data from each spots are collected by this office in every month. A statement showing the tourist arrival to Keonjhar during last three calendar years in enclosed herewith. Tourism publicity For wise publicity of tourism potentiality in the district this office is organized tourism exhibition stall at different fairs and festival by displaying laminated photographs of identified tourist spots. Tourism literatures and posters are distributed to the visiting tourists as well as through the hoteliers of the district. Besides five nos. hoardings have been displayed at Ghasipura, Dhobadiha (Keonjhar town), Singada Chhak in Mayurbhanj district, Remuli Chhak and at Nalda boarder check gate. Approval of Tourism Related Projects Approval is given to the tourism related activities like establishment of Hotels, Motels, Travel Agency set up by private entrepreneurs. A sample copy of application for approval of tourism project is appended herewith. To get the approval of project the application is to be submitted to the Director of Tourism, Orissa, Bhubaneswar through District Tourist Officer, Keonjhar.
The department of Tourism has sanctioned five nos. of tourism projects for Keonjhar. The latest position of the project is submitted herewith in a separate sheet. 1. Panthasala Ghatagaon : A four double beded Panthasala has been constructed at Ghatagaon to create accommodation facilities for the visiting tourists. The estimated cost of the project was Rs.5,37,700.00. The bunglow has been opened for the tourists with effect from 1.7.1999. 2. Wayside Amenities Centre,Ghatagaon : The Govt. of India has sanctioned a sum of Rs. 25 lakhs for construction of wayside amenities centre at Ghatagaon. As per the instruction of the then Collector, Keonjhar it has been decided to construct the second project inside the existing Panthasala land of A c.1.00 alienated infavour of Tourism Deptt. due to non-availability of further Govt. land nearby the building. The project is now available for administrative approval. 3. Wayside Amenities Centre at Sanaghagara ; The Govt. of India has sanctioned a sum of Rs.28.35 lakhs for construction of wayside amenities centre at Sanaghagara. An area of govt. land measuring Hc.2.000 has been alienated in favour of Tourism Deptt. Vide Collector, Keonjhar Sanction order No.3092/Rev. dated 18.12.97. The project is at Govt. level for administrative approval. 4. Tourist Complex at Keonjhar : A sum of Rs. 69.02 lakhs has been sanctioned by the Govt. of India for construction of Tourist Complex at Keonjhar. For selection of site this office has already applied to the Sub-Collector,Keonjhar vide this office letter No.312 dated 17.8.99. The site selection has not yet been finalised. 5. Wayside Amenities Centre at deogaon kushaleswar : The Govt. of India has also sanctioned a sum of Rs.9.72 lakhs for construction of wayside amenities centre at Deogaon Kushaleswar. This office has already applied for selection of a suitable site to the Sub-Collector, Anandapur vide this office letter no.310 dated 17.8.99. But the site selection work has not completed yet. District culture Office, Keonjhar under the administrative control of Department of Culture & Tourism is functioning in the up-stair of the new building of the Collectorate, Keonjhar since 1998-99.
The District Library was started functioning in Keonjhar from since 1977. it is functioning in a room of District RED CROSS Building situated near District Headquarters hospital. As per the Stock Register and Catalogue that total 10,870 nos. of books are available in District Library. The books received from Sahitya Academy are being sold here. Now two hundred books are available for sell. Every day the Library remains open from 11AM to 6 PM except Monday. As the Sunday is the working day of the Library staff, Department of Culture has fixed Monday as the weekly holiday.
The District Museum is functioning in the premises of Baladevjew Temple at Old town, Keonjhar and another branch museum is functioning at Khiching under Mayurbhanj district under the administrative control of District Culture Office, Keonjhar. Both the museums are being neglected due to lack of sufficient funds for management. Various antiquities have been collected and kept at District Museum, Keonjhar and Branch Museum, Khiching.
Organisation Of District Cultural Festival And Different Jayantees The following Jayantees are observed by the District Culture Office, Keonjhar in a befitting manner every year.
Grant-In-Aid To Different Youth Club/N.G.Os Purchase of Books/Furniture/Equipments Raja Ram Mohan Ray Library foundation invites application every year from the registered Youth Club/N.G.Os for providing the books and sanction of funds for purchase of books for developments in the library in rural and urban areas. The details of the application form for purchase of Books/ Furniture/ Equipments and getting financial assistance from R.R.R.L.F. is appended in Annexure-I. Construction of Building R.R.R.L.F. invites application every year from the registered Youth Club/N.G.O.s for construction of building and extension for development in the library in the rural and urban area.
